GPS-landmælingar

GPS-kerfið (Global Positioning System) gefur frá sér merki sem notuð eru í leiðsögutæki, og flestir kannast við nú orðið. Merki kerfisins má einnig nota til að gera mjög nákvæmar landmælingar og hefur sú tækni valdið byltingu í landmælingafræði á síðustu tveimur áratugum. Hægt er með tiltölulega auðveldri mælingu að staðsetja mælipunkta með fáeinna millimetra nákvæmni. Tæknin er í örri þróun. Nýir möguleikar hafa opnast til að beita þessum aðferðum til að mæla hreyfingar jarðskorpunnar.  Tvenns konar aðferðum er beitt. 1) Endurteknar mælingar á neti mælipunkta, til að ákvarða aflögun yfir stórt svæði. 2) Samfelldar mælingar á tilteknum stöðum, til að finna og tímasetja hreyfingar. Er þá sett upp fast tæki og það látið mæla nánast samfellt. Hagstætt er að beita báðum aðferðum samtímis til að ákvarða hreyfingar bæði í rúmi og tíma. Tækninni hefur verið beitt hér á landi til að ákvarða flekahreyfingar, aflögun unhverfis flekaskil, landris vegna fargbreytinga, aflögun vegna jarðskjálfta, aflögun umhverfis virk eldfjöllog fleira.
