Útdráttur:
The tempo of magma transport and volcanism at the surface is strongly modulated by the mechanical response of Earth’s crust. Elevated temperatures in crustal rocks, an expected outcome of prolonged magmatism at volcanic centers, promote ductile rheology that promote magma storage rather than fracturing and elastic deformation, and strongly modulate geophysical signals at the surface. However, viscoelastic response of rocks also depends on strain rate and exhibits memory effects that are poorly understood. I will talk about ongoing work in my research group on viscoelasticity across scales of volcanic processes, from its influence on ground deformation patterns at active volcanoes on week-month timescales, to viscoelastic influence on eruption cycles over 100s-1000s years, to viscoelastic control on intrusive: extrusive magmatic partitioning that modulates long-term (1-10s Myr) climate forcing from Large Igneous Provinces.
Öll velkomin!
